UI / UX Case Study
Royal Oak Foundation

Problem:

The Royal Oak Foundation seeks to raise awareness of and advance the work of the National Trust of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, but the website lacked the tools to effectively foster and retain membership and community involvement.

Solution

Design a platform that helps bring together heritage and community "to preserve and protect historic places and spaces—for ever, for everyone."

Lesson Learned

Starting at just $80/year, I can basically be a Disney Princess.

Research & Discovery

We focused heavily on brand analysis and understanding what differentiated the Royal Oak Foundation from their partner, the National Trust of England. Why would we become members of the Royal Oak? What is their benefit over the National Trust? What users might want to join this foundation and how might we get them there?

Analysis

The Royal Oak Foundation has ~7,000 households as paying members, but their website lacked a strong membership portal or calls to join their cause. We envisioned a site that would enable users to see the beauty that a Royal Oak Foundation membership can bring them, and give them an easier path to it.

Design Strategy

We wanted to create a website that would inspire through imagery and design, but still make sense for their users. Key feedback pointed to their parent organization, The National Trust of England's website, being too visually heavy for Royal Oak's users, while Royal Oak's current website was too text heavy. We wanted to find a middle ground.

Design Objectives:

  • Strong hero images and image based modules to inspire

  • Analogous Color Palette to balance imagery

  • Clear, consistent navigation and type hierarchy

  • Full width display to maximize real estate
